Background

Sound It Out is a website that aims to help parents talk to children about difficult topics. The team differentiates itself by using music and interactive games to help parents have effective conversations with their children.

User goals

  1. To get the items I need when I need it.
  2. To be able to manage and control my subscription anytime.
  3. To be able to trust that the company will honor my wishes.

Business goals

  1. Increase subscriptions
  2. Provide a better user experience
  3. Create trust

Problem

  • The information architecture was confusing. It’s hard to understand what the website was actually about.
  • Above the fold focused on the power of music to start conversations BUT the main content were guides on how to talk to their kids.
  • The user journey was confusing. It’s not clear whether they need to be using music or games or how that relates to the guides.
  • It highlights music, but the music section doesn’t give a lot of information as to how it’s related.

My approach

Understand users and align on the problem

Knowing who your users are is essential to figuring out the experience they need.

Align on goals

Especially with clients, it’s important to align on goals to make sure you are all on the same page.

Propose and align on a priority guide

Helps the team align on the goals, which makes finding the solution much easier.

Mapped user journeys for the team to approve

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Conducted competitor analysis to develop ideas for the website

This helps us understand what’s out there in the market.

Mapped out a sitemap to incorporate the journeys

Making sure all the journeys are incorporated.

Created IA based on user journeys and competitive analysis

Researched multiple competitors to determine the best way to organize content.

Identified navigation based on card sorting and user journey

Showed options to stakeholders for feedback and refining.

Created content models for the designer

Content models help create consistent patterns throughout the website.

Worked with the team to review and confirm content

Multiple stakeholders, legal, compliance, and more.

Solution

Improved content to help guide users through the journey better

  • Makes it easier for users to understand what the website is about.
  • Gives users an actual step-by-step guide to follow the journey easily.
  • Actionable CTAs.

Other things to note:

  • Negotiated with marketing to move the content about music below the fold.
